Library
The library is at the heart of our school and plays an active role in the Cheam High School learning environment both by encouraging reading and promoting literacy throughout the school. The library is staffed by our Library Manager and Library Assistant and provides a bright and welcoming setting for reading as well as private and group study. We hold over 4,000 books across a wide range of genres and have a suite of 35 computers and printing facilities. The careers room is also located in the library and supports students from Year 10 upwards.
The library hosts library lessons through Years 7, 8 and 9 giving students a regular opportunity to explore new authors and genres. Students’ reading levels are assessed each term and students are encouraged to choose books which challenge and extend their reading. To build reading confidence and skills, our Reading Plus programme provides years 7-11 with the opportunity to do regular reading practice to develop fluency, comprehension and motivation that students need to be successful readers.
In addition to lessons, a number of clubs and fun book related events are held throughout the year which enable students to have fun, make new friends and relax. For example, author visits, World Book Day and themed weeks such as Roald Dahl, Spooky Halloween and Christmas.
Use of the Library
All students are required to treat the library, its staff and resources with respect. Any instances of inappropriate or disruptive behaviour will be dealt with following the behaviour for learning policy and school systems.
The library uses OLIVER, a computerised library system, which provides students with accurate information on their current loans, up-to-date details about all the resources available, with the ability to reserve any resource required. All students are members of the school library and given an OLIVER account at the beginning of Year 7, enabling them to borrow books for up to two weeks at a time. We also have a team of student librarians who help keep the shelves tidy and can help with book recommendations.
Book Returns
Students are expected to return borrowed books in a timely manner and in the condition in which they were received.
Where resources are not returned by the correct date, students will be notified via PowerPoints in tutor time/assembly.
If the book is still not returned after a 2-week period, an email is sent to the parent/carer asking for the book to be returned and informed that there is a £5 - £10 charge, depending on the book, should it be lost.
Students are able to renew overdue books by visiting the library. Should they wish to return a resource, they can do so by using the returns box at the door or coming into the LRC. If a student or parent offers to replace a lost book, that is another option and we will always accommodate this.
Access Policy
Cheam High School’s students vary greatly in age, maturity level, life experience, interests and ability, and as such every resource in the school library will not be suitable for every pupil. Similarly, while the librarians will encourage and guide pupils toward suitable resources, they cannot gauge suitability of every resource for every student.
The library is committed to providing open and equal access to information for all students. We support students’ freedom to read and explore a wide range of ideas, perspectives, and experiences.
While age ratings and content warnings may be used as guidance, the library does not restrict access to books based solely on age or maturity ratings. We believe students are capable of making informed reading choices — often in consultation with parents, guardians, or teachers — and we encourage critical thinking and open dialogue. Therefore, Cheam High School will encourage parents and carers to continue to engage with their children’s reading. If parents/carers believe a resource that their child has brought home for personal reading is unsuitable, they should ask their child to return it to the library. We always welcome book recommendation requests and are happy to help students find something more suitable
