Table Tennis Regional Finals

Having both qualified from a very strong Sutton section, the U13 and U16 A teams travelled to compete in the Regional table tennis stage for the first time ever.

The U13s travelled to Wilson’s on Tuesday 21st November – this stage was organised on a knockout basis. In the first round the boys dominated Harris Crystal Palace winning the round 8-0.

In the semi-final they came up against Wallington – whom they had narrowly defeated in the Borough tournament and a recent friendly. Unfortunately, they got off to a sluggish start losing the first four games. Luca was then losing 0-2 but battled back to win his game 3-2 to give us the chance of an incredible comeback. At one stage the comeback looked on, but Wallington managed to win one of their games to claim the tie 3-5 and progress to the final. This is the first time we have competed at this level, so to lose in a close fought tie against the eventual winners is a creditable performance.

The U16’s travelled to Wallington on Thursday 23rd November. They did not get going on their first round, losing to a team they perhaps should have beaten. This meant they went into the plate competition.

They came to life in the plate semi-final with an 8-0 whitewash of Harris Merton and went on to face Coombe in the plate final. This was another close tie and either team could have taken the victory, however Coombe eventually emerged 3-5 winners to leave Cheam as the runners up in the plate competition.

Cheam have proved that we can compete with the best schools in the area and we have a number of friendly games lined up over the coming weeks. Well done to those that took part.
