On Tuesday 21st May, Miss Mulcahy, Mr Martin, Mr Draper, Mrs Carter and Mrs Risebro took a team of 75 students to the annual Sutton Schools Athletics Championships at David Weir Leisure Centre. Throughout the day, students from Year Groups 7-10 took part in a variety of track and field events, all earning points for their school.

For the first two weeks of this half term, students took part in Athletics trials as part of their Games lessons. They were taken up to the park to run a sprint and middle distance event, to the long jump pit for long jump and triple jump practice, and to the astro for the throwing events. A big thank you to the PE department for running these trials. It allowed us to identify some of the school’s strongest athletes and put forward the strongest team for the event.

The energy and enthusiasm on the day was fantastic and all students were determined to perform well in their event; aiming to beat their personal best scores and earn individual medals. Unlike last year when we were treated to glorious sunshine, this year the weather was not on our side... a risk taken when the event was moved a month earlier than 2023! A few hours into the event, the heavens opened and the rain didn’t stop. The marquee, which was intended to be used as protection from the sun, was quickly put up and students huddled under this for the remainder of the day. Even in these challenging conditions, our students stepped up and performed exceptionally well. There was a fantastic display of talent across all events – the best we have seen in recent years. Staff and students were soaked through and cold, but everyone continued to get behind one another, congratulating successes and contributing points to the overall score.
