On Tuesday 5th November, Year 13 Drama students had the fantastic opportunity to visit the Phoenix Theatre in London to see Stranger Things: The First Shadow. As part of their A Level Drama written exam, students are required to analyse and evaluate live theatre, and this was the perfect production to write about!
Brought to life by a multi-award- winning creative team, who take theatrical storytelling and stagecraft to a whole new dimension, this gripping production amazed students. The show, based on the wildly popular Netflix series Stranger Things, transported the audience into the eerie, suspenseful world of Hawkins, Indiana, with stunning set designs, immersive soundscapes, and jaw- dropping special effects that kept everyone on the edge of their seats.
For many students, this was not just a trip to the theatre; it was an opportunity to see live theatre at its most innovative and impactful. From the atmospheric lighting that transformed the stage into a hauntingly beautiful landscape, to the powerful performances from the cast, it was clear that this was a production that pushed the boundaries of what theatre can do. The use of projections, smoke effects and the intricate set design allowed the supernatural elements of the Stranger Things universe to come to life in a way that was both visually stunning and emotionally engaging.
Students were particularly impressed with how the production integrated elements of the original TV series, including its distinct 1980s-inspired aesthetic, into the theatrical experience. The characters, both familiar and new, were brought to life with such energy and conviction that they felt just as real as they did on screen. It was a fantastic opportunity for students to see how live theatre can adapt popular media, and how stagecraft plays a vital role in creating a fully immersive narrative.
For many, the trip also served as a source of inspiration. The way the production creatively used space, sound, and lighting to build tension and suspense gave students valuable insights into the practical application of these techniques for their own drama performances.
The trip to the Phoenix Theatre to see Stranger Things: The First Shadow was a memorable and enriching experience for Year 13 Drama students. It not only provided them with a captivating evening of theatre but also gave them a wealth of material to draw upon as they continue their studies and prepare for their A Level exams. This was a perfect example of how live theatre can both entertain and educate, leaving a lasting impression on all who attended.
