U14s Surrey Cup Final

CHEAM 2–3 ST RICHARD REYNOLDS

Cheam U14s produced a spirited and courageous performance in the Surrey Cup Final at Meadowbank Stadium, Dorking, narrowly losing 3-2 to St Richard Reynolds after an entertaining and hard-fought contest.

Cheam started the game brightly and took an early lead through a well-worked set piece from a throw-in. Jack L received the ball in a tight area, turned sharply and calmly fired past the goalkeeper to make it 1-0.

Just five minutes later, St Richard Reynolds were awarded a free kick on the edge of the box. They capitalised on the opportunity, finding the equaliser to bring the score to 1-1.

The momentum then swung further in St Richard Reynolds’ favour shortly before half-time when they broke quickly on the counter attack and finished clinically to take a 2-1 lead into the break.

Cheam came out strongly in the second half and immediately put their opponents under pressure, creating several good chances but unfortunately failing to convert. Their inability to take those opportunities proved costly when St Richard Reynolds punished a failure to clear the ball properly and added a third goal to make it 3-1.

Despite the setback, Cheam refused to give up and continued to attack relentlessly. Their efforts were rewarded when Tommy produced a moment of quality, chipping the ball from just inside the 18-yard box over both the defence and goalkeeper to reduce the deficit to 3-2.

Cheam pushed forward with determination in search of a dramatic equaliser. In the final moments of the game, Lucas came agonisingly close when his powerful header struck the crossbar with virtually the last kick of the match.

Although the result did not go their way, Cheam can be immensely proud of their performance and the excellent football they played throughout the final. The match highlighted valuable lessons for the young side, particularly around being more clinical in front of goal and avoiding giving away chances - experiences that will no doubt help inspire and develop the team for next season.

Overall, the boys should be extremely proud of reaching the Surrey Cup Final and the character, effort and quality they showed on such a big occasion.
