Table Tennis Update
Posted: 27/02/25

Table Tennis continues to thrive at Cheam - students continue to work hard to develop their game at coaching sessions on Tuesdays after school with our Head Coach Jag Patel with a number of them also committing to practice every lunchtime.
There is also an open club on a Monday which any student can attend. Teams have been entered in the London South League and there have also been some friendly fixtures as well as the London South Individual tournaments.
LONDON SOUTH LEAGUES
The U13 team are currently in the London South League and recently drew five games all away to Whitgift.
The U16 team are also in this league. Thus far they have only lost to Wallington and most recently defeated Whitgift 7-3. With two games to go, they are in the running to win the league at their first attempt which would be a brilliant achievement!
LONDON SOUTH INDIVIDUAL TOURNAMENTS
On Friday 31st January, Mr Harris took a number of students to compete in various age categories. It was a long afternoon of intense competition in which Cheam acquitted themselves admirably.
In the U13 boys section both Frankie and Kaelen made it through their qualifying group in impressive style – they were able to navigate the first round of the knockout stages but unfortunately were not able to make it past the last 15 but still an excellent achievement.
Zita and Yoyo also qualified for the knockout stages in the girls U13 and U16 section respectively and progressed into the quarter finals. They both then progressed to the semi-finals but unfortunately just lost out to some very strong opposition.
Due to restrictions on the number of students able to enter each age group, Priyansh and Luca were entered into the U19 section - playing five years above their actual age group! They both performed superbly and did not look out of place competing at this level – they both qualified from their groups and progressed into the last eight which is an amazing achievement in itself. In the quarter finals they came up against nationally ranked opponents. Luca’s opponent was the UK number three! They did not manage to progress further but found themselves in a play- off situation for 5th place – both boys won their play off and had to face each other in a tight game in which Luca came out on top.
This means that Zita, Yoyo and Luca have all qualified for the national finals to be held in London in April – huge congratulations to them all!
The U16 boys travelled to Wallington on Thursday 16th February for their event which was of an even higher standard. Four of the five entrants navigated the group stages. Jedi was then knocked out in the next round while Ibrahim, Hajune and Seiji progressed, only to lose to strong opponents in the last 16. Meanwhile Jed was able to reach the semi-finals of the plate competition.
Cheam have become a force to be reckoned with in our first proper year on the schools circuit and we hope to build on this in the future – we have also beaten Overton in a friendly fixture and plan on further friendlies in the next term to give more students the opportunity to represent the school.
In the summer term Mr Harris will be holding the 2nd annual school championships to find our elite players at U13 and U16 level - these will be open to all students.
